Department of Ancient History and Ancient Cultures Research Centre (ACRC) at Macquarie University, NSW, Australia
The Department of Ancient History at Macquarie University has a long tradition of research on the ancient Western civilisations and a vast experience on-the-field in Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, Near East, Roman and Greek world. The Department currently offers over forty units for study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its vibrant and multidisciplinary research environment is enhanced through the affiliation of such satellite Research Centres as the Ancient Cultures Research Centre (ACRC) -that incorporates the Australian Centre for Egyptology and the Ancient History Documentary Research Centre-, the endowed Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS), and a good number of Research Projects supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC).The Ancient Cultures Research Centre (ACRC) undertakes collaborative research on cross-cultural interaction in ancient cultures from Western Europe to China and draws its membership from the Department of Ancient History, the Department of International Studies, and the Department Of Environment And Geography– Environmental Sciences, spanning the Faculties of Arts and Science, and allowing for truly interdisciplinary approaches to the ancient world. It concentrates not only on the history of the societies concerned, but on the languages they used, and has a special focus on the close study of physical artefacts from antiquity.
The unique collocation of expertise in the ACRC supports cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research across Egyptian Greek, Roman, and Byzantine culture, west to the foundations of medieval Europe and east along the Silk Road to China. Projects concentrate on times and places in which different cultural groups interacted closely. Intercultural studies of this kind fall outside the scope of single disciplines and the restricted research foci of most Ancient History departments, but are made possible by the range of expertise and specialties in the ACRC.
The department will participate in the activities of ArcLand within the framework of Work Package 6, which aims to provide support for aerial survey, remote sensing and landscape exploration in countries relatively new to their use. With this in mind, the Department/ACRC will seek to promote an aerial archaeology training school in Australia in 2013.
